About our speakers:
Dr. Greg Holland president of Landcare Mornington Peninsula
Greg is President of the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network, coordinator of the establishment of Bernie’s Biolink from Greens Bush to Arthurs Seat, and newsletter editor. He also is passionate about rejuvenating the ecological system on his small property – where over 1,100 native species have been documented.
Dr. Mark Fancett president of Peninsula Preservation Group Inc
Mark was one of the original members of Peninsula Preservation Group that was established to fight against a proposed landfill and then a massive quarry on the northern slopes of Arthurs Seat. Mark was part of the group that established Sheepwash Creek Landcare Group.
Dirk Jansen president of Mornington Peninsula Koala Conservation
Seven years ago, Dirk became curious about the koala population on Mornington Peninsula. He started a Facebook group to gain local knowledge about where the koalas live and their population numbers. He then formed a Landcare group. In September 2022 Dirk was awarded the Mornington Peninsula Shire Citizen of the Year.
Jeff Weir OAM executive director of Dolphin Research Institute
Jeff’s diverse background in Marine Biology, Education and Business prepared him well for being the founding director of the Western Port UNESCO Biosphere and a member of Victoria's Central Coastal Board. After many years of voluntary and part-time work at Dolphin Research Institute he became director in 1997. Jeff received an Order of Australia Medal in the 2019.
Stephen Brend project manager Western Port Biosphere Foundation
Stephen is a qualified zoologist with over thirty years’ experience of wildlife conservation. His work has taken him to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Stephen has worked with primates, carnivores and bats as well as marine species. Protecting Western Port, with its thousands of migratory birds, is one of his passions.
Gidja Walker ecologist
Gidja is an ecological consultant and natural systems teacher who specialises restoration ecology; threatened species; endangered ecosystems including Moonah Woodland and wetlands, coastal and saltmarsh ecology; fire ecology, plant survey/identification, weed assessment; uses of indigenous plants. She has received a Banksia Award and Parks Victoria Kookaburra Award I recognition of her work.
